Cooler weather is on the way in Atlanta, and for pests that means a warm house looks like the perfect winter home. Mice, roaches, and other critters start hunting for shelter as temperatures drop, so the best time to keep them out is before they find a way in. Here is the pest-proofing checklist I share with my Atlanta clients: simple steps you can do yourself, plus a few tasks worth leaving to a professional.
Walk the Outside of Your Home
Start at the foundation and walk the full perimeter of your house. Look for gaps where pipes, cables, and wires enter the walls; these are classic entry points, and mice can squeeze through an opening the size of a dime. Seal utility-line gaps with caulk or expanding foam, and check the flashing where the siding meets the foundation.
Seal Doors and Windows
Inspect the sweep at the bottom of every exterior door, and replace it if you can see daylight underneath. Check the weatherstripping around doors and windows, and repair any cracked or missing sections. A tight seal keeps out drafts and pests at the same time, so this one task earns its place on the list.
Screen Vents and Check the Chimney
Roof vents, attic vents, and dryer vents are open invitations when they lack a screen. Confirm every exterior vent has fine mesh in good condition, make sure the chimney has a cap, and glance up at the roofline for gaps where the fascia meets the roof.
Cut Off Food and Water
Pests come inside for two reasons: warmth and food. Keep kitchens clean, store pantry staples in sealed containers, and take out trash on a regular schedule. Fix dripping faucets, clear standing water in the garage or crawl space, and do not leave pet food out overnight.
Declutter Where Pests Hide
Cardboard boxes, stacked paper, and piles of clutter are ideal hiding spots. Store seasonal items in plastic bins with lids, keep storage off the floor, and elevate what you can in the garage and attic so you can spot a problem before it grows.
Know When to Call a Professional
Sealing up your home handles most situations, but some pests need a licensed pest control professional. If you see droppings, gnawed wires, or other signs of an active infestation, call a pro before the problem spreads. An issue handled early is always simpler than one left to grow.
A couple of weekends of simple prevention can save you from a much bigger headache when the coldest months arrive. And if you are thinking about your home, whether it is a maintenance project, a refresh, or a future move, I would love to help. Let's talk. Talk soon, Nadine.
