Some of Atlanta's best meals are hiding in plain sight, and The General Muir is one of them. Tucked into Emory Point at 1540 Avenue Place, just steps from Emory's campus, this modern American deli has been serving hand-rolled bagels and house-cured pastrami since January 2013, according to the restaurant's official website, thegeneralmuir.com. It is the rare spot that feels like a neighborhood staple and a destination at the same time.
A Deli With a Story Worth Telling
The General Muir takes its name from the SS General Muir, the ship that brought co-owner Jennifer Johnson's mother and maternal grandparents, Holocaust survivors, to New York in 1949, according to the restaurant's Our Story page. That journey inspired a menu rooted in the classic Jewish deli tradition. Jennifer and Ben Johnson, the owners of West Egg Café, teamed up with chef Todd Ginsberg and Shelley Sweet to open the restaurant at Emory Point, a story that Atlanta Magazine and the Emory Report both covered when it opened in 2013.
Bagels, Pastrami, and Everything in Between
Almost everything here is made in-house. Bagels are hand-rolled and kettle-boiled the traditional way, and the pastrami is cured and smoked on the premises, per the restaurant's website. The Avenue A bagel with house-cured salmon is a fan favorite, and the full deli and bakery counter means you can grab breakfast, lunch, or a loaf of bread on the way out. The Atlanta Jewish Times has named The General Muir one of America's best delis, and the restaurant holds a MICHELIN recommendation in Atlanta.
Why It Matters Around Emory
When I show homes near Emory, Toco Hills, and Druid Hills, spots like this often make the difference. A neighborhood with a local deli that people genuinely love is a neighborhood people want to come home to, and The General Muir has filled that role for more than a decade. There is also a second location in Sandy Springs, per the Atlanta Jewish Times, so North Fulton residents can get the same bagels without crossing town.
Whether you are a first-time buyer touring condos near campus, a relocating family getting to know Atlanta, or a longtime local who has somehow not been yet, put The General Muir on your list. Great neighborhoods deserve great lunch spots, and this one is worth the trip. If you are thinking about where to live next, let's connect, and I will show you the blocks, the homes, and the tables around them. Talk soon, Nadine.
