Dryer Vent Cleaning: A Simple Home Maintenance Checklist for Atlanta Homeowners

Your dryer works hard all year, and so does its vent. Every load pushes warm, damp air through a duct that carries lint and moisture out of your home, and over time that duct catches what it cannot push all the way outside. A clogged dryer vent makes clothes take longer to dry, forces the machine to work harder, and raises the risk of a household fire. A simple annual cleaning prevents the problem, and here is the checklist I share with my Atlanta homeowners.

Clean the Lint Trap Every Load

The lint trap catches most of the lint before it ever reaches the duct. Empty it before or after every load, then wipe the screen with a damp hand or a soft brush to clear the film that a shake alone leaves behind. This one habit does more for dryer safety than any other step on this list.

Clean the Full Duct Once a Year

Once a year, unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall to clean the whole duct, not just the opening you can see. A flexible dryer vent brush reaches inside, and a shop vacuum pulls out the loose material. While you are back there, check the duct for crushed, kinked, or separated sections. A damaged duct gives lint a place to pile up unseen.

Inspect the Outside Vent Flap

Locate the vent flap on the outside of your home and make sure it opens easily when the dryer runs and closes snugly when it stops. A stuck flap invites pests and weather inside, or traps heat and moisture in the duct. Clear away lint, leaves, and nests gathered around the opening.

Watch for the Warning Signs

Your dryer usually tells you when something is wrong. If clothes come out hotter than usual, take longer to dry, or the laundry room feels humid while the dryer runs, the vent likely needs attention. The lint trap can look perfectly clean while the duct behind it sits nearly full, so trust the symptoms, not just a clean screen.

Use the Right Materials and Know When to Call a Pro

The safest installs use a smooth metal vent duct, not the flexible plastic or foil kind sold in hardware stores. If your home has an older style duct, ask a professional to replace it. And if you cannot reach the full length of the duct, the run is long, or the vent passes through a wall or ceiling, hire a licensed professional for the annual cleaning. It is a quick job with the right tools, and knowing the whole line is clear brings real peace of mind.

A clean dryer vent takes a couple of hours once a year, and it is one of the simplest home safety projects there is. If you are thinking about your home, whether it is a maintenance project, a refresh, or a future move, I would love to help. Let's talk. Talk soon, Nadine.
