If you are exploring Buckhead, Atlanta Memorial Park is one of the first places I point new buyers toward. This roughly 200-acre public park hugs Peachtree Creek and ranks as Atlanta's third-largest public park, according to the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy. It is equal parts history and everyday green space, and for anyone weighing a move to the neighborhood, it is an amenity worth knowing well.

A Park with Deep History

The land here was the site of the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864, one of the largest engagements of the Civil War's Atlanta Campaign, and the park serves as a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died there, per atlmemorialpark.org. In 1929, former Georgia Governor M. Hoke Smith and others donated the land to the city of Atlanta. Decades later, after severe flooding in 2009 exposed years of neglect, the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy led a master-plan restoration of the trails, trees, and creek banks that is still improving the park today, according to Buckhead.com.

Two Sides, Two Kinds of Afternoon

Northside Drive splits the park into two very different experiences. The eastern side holds open fields, ball fields, picnic areas, a playground on Wesley Drive, the Bobby Jones Golf Course, and the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, which opened in 1952 and still hosts national tournaments. The western side, between Northside Drive and Howell Mill Road, follows the south bank of Peachtree Creek with wooded walking and running trails winding through white ash and sweet gum trees. Bring a coffee and take the quiet loop; it is the part locals mean when they call the park a hidden gem.

The BeltLine Starts Here

Atlanta Memorial Park is the northern terminus of the BeltLine's Northside Trail, a flat, paved, tree-canopied path that runs about a mile through Tanyard Creek Park before connecting into the wider Atlanta BeltLine network, per TrailLink. Trailhead parking is available off Woodward Way and Havenridge Drive and at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center. On a fall weekend morning you will find runners, dog walkers, and families on bikes all making the most of it.

Why It Matters When You Are Buying

When I show Buckhead homes, green space like this often decides the neighborhood. Easy access to trails, a playground, and the BeltLine shapes what a house feels like to live in every single day, not just on moving day. Atlanta Memorial Park sits within minutes of some of Buckhead's most desirable addresses, and its ongoing restoration shows how much the community values it.

Whether you are relocating to Atlanta or simply getting to know Buckhead better, I love sharing places like this with clients. If you are thinking about where to live next, let's connect and I will show you the neighborhoods that surround them. Talk soon, Nadine.
